MS. AMELIA SHELDON
ELEMENTARY II & MIDDLE SCHOOL EDUCATOR
AMS Elementary II (9-12 Upper Elementary) Montessori Teacher Training Certificate from CMTE/NY, BA in English with a minor in Journalism from SUNY Stony Brook, 10 years of experience in editorial departments at Random House, Simon & Schuster and Henry Holt & Company, over 20 years of experience as a freelance editor and two years as a literary agent, 12 years of experience as an Educator
While she loves animals, time in nature, kickboxing and baking in the kitchen, Amelia has likely spent the majority of life’s happy hours with her nose in a book, a pencil in her hand, and sharing her delight in all things literary with others.
Amelia was raised in farm homes surrounded by plants, trees and flowers, flanked by stonewalls and filled with animals, books, art, writing and music. Independent thinking, creativity, humor and a strong work ethic were family-instilled values that led Amelia to work her way through university, where she was editor-in-chief of the student-run newspaper Statesman as well as a campus stringer for Newsday, and go on to find positions for a decade in NYC publishing. After going freelance and moving to Arizona, Amelia followed her daughter into Montessori where she discovered the joy of teaching in classrooms the likes of which she had never known. To interact with Learners in the prepared environment, Amelia was thrilled to see children confidently find their own passions blossom. It deeply resonated with her upbringing by intellectual parents grounded in the earth and nature. Amelia feels that sharing the child-centered model of self-directed learning is a privilege that will never lose its thrill.
