At TMSH, the Learners will focus on a Team project over the course of the year. As 8th Graders, they can look to do two different or personal projects.
Yes! Time is spent in the Fall on learning how to speak / group present. Winter is used for individual speech writing (group and individual), and there will be presentations made in the Spring.
Both 7th and 8th Grade classes will work together to do something for the local community. Each year they will decide their area of focus and then determine how to get involved. Together, 7th and 8th Grade Learners will also from the TSH Community Outreach Committee, and work with our younger Learners to be involved locally.
Learners that leave TSH are doing so with the strongest academic abilities, along with a focused Executive Functioning skillset. Our current
Alumni have flourished in all their schools, be it Public or Private. Many are at the heads of their class, and we have been told set the example for others to follow.
At TSH we only test in 4th grade and above and only once a year. In our Middle School Program, our Learners are working on their passion – they may be competing at the highest level, starting a company or contributing to society. The last thing they need is busy work. Our tests are weekly for rote subjects like grammar and mathematics. For science, history, English and language, our assessments are monthly. Homework becomes week-long projects where Learners collaborate as well as submit personal work. They are multi-layered projects, making certain that a project in history also coincides with science. Observation and mastery (either quizzing or your ability to teach a younger learner) are used heavily.
At the end of a day your Learner will be tired. They have so much fun while at TSH and put in so much energy, why wouldn’t they be exhausted?!
When you pick them up ask one or two “small” questions. Who did you sit with at lunch? What Workshop did you have today? You’ll find once they rest a bit and have a snack they’ll begin to refuel and share more about their day. Most Learners are eager to have their longest conversations as you are putting them to bed!
You need to teach it! To be responsible means that you also have a capacity to do it. Adolescents need as much sleep as toddlers, they need their parents more than they did in childhood and they want meaningful work – the absence of these things is what leads to unwanted behavior and risk. We can teach our children organization, executive functioning skills and responsibility – more especially at The School House Middle School.
TSH is fortunate to have a Team of incredible Educators who excel at their craft and are wonderful people. Each member plays an integral part
ensuring that the environment each day is one of kindness and respect. We have a strict no gossip policy and no politics policy. If each person puts the Learner first in all they do and offers support to their colleagues they can only add to the Team.
Executive Functioning skills focus on areas of organization, time management, social awareness and problem-solving. By making these part of the curriculum, they are better equipped to handle multi-step work, navigate social moments, and become a confident, independent Learner.
